One of my favorite paintings in the world.  Scholz had gone to various farmers’ houses to ask for food in  famine stricken Germany after the first war. One farmer refused and suggested he look in the compost pile for a meal.
There’s an appliqued photo of the Kaiser on the wall. What a great way to get revenge on a religious hypocrite: paint a great work of art that lasts for years and is seen by millions.
