Bread and Puppet 2010
Mabel, my granddaughter, was in four acts of the circus. She beamed like a lighthouse and fell in with her fellow juvenile delinquents instantly. My wonderful nemisis and buddy Oive “Spanky” “Petunia” “etc” Brecht took Mabel under her wing and was sweet as heck with both of the JDs.
The other granddaughter Sadie, almost 3, wanted nothing to do with being in the show. Maybe next year. I will continue to be a stealth grandma in my attempts to get the two of them to love the smell of grease paint, the glare of footlights, and the humiliation of abject poverty that we thesbians so enjoy.
Mabel is the third generation of Zalooms to be exploited by Maestro Shoe and his puppet shennanigans. I would have been floored if I had known when I first ambled into this Bread thing at age 19 and got swindled into the whole wonderful scenario. The family tradition continues. Yay!
